CHAPEL HILL, NC – Knotted at a goal apiece after two overtime periods, No. 7 Stanford dropped a penalty shootout by a score of 5-4 to No. 15 BYU from North Carolina's Dorrance Field in the NCAA Tournament second round.
BYU (11-2-7) will advance to play the winner of No. 2 North Carolina and Georgia, while Stanford's season comes to an end.
The Cardinal was forced to play from behind early in the match after allowing a goal to BYU's Olivia Wade in the fourth minute. Wade's goal came on the first shot of the afternoon for the Cougars.
Stanford, which managed a 16-7 shot advantage in the opening 45 minutes, got the equalizer in the 22nd minute as Jasmine Aikey played a give-and-go with Maya Doms and beat BYU's keeper Savanna Mason as she came out to challenge the shot.
For Aikey, the goal was her fifth in two NCAA Tournament matches. She finishes her stellar freshman campaign with 10 goals – tied with fellow freshman Lumi Kostmayer for the team lead.

With the clock ticking down on the second 10-minute overtime period, Stanford earned a corner kick in the 108th minute – its 13th of the match. The ball swung in and landed at the foot of Elise Evans who put a shot on goal that bounced just on the edge of the back of the goal line before being cleared away. The center referee stopped the match and went to the monitor for a video review, but it was ruled no goal – ultimately sending the match to penalty kicks.
The two teams traded four successful penalties, leaving the match in the hands of the fifth and final player in line. Evans stepped to the spot and was denied by substitute goalkeeper Camryn Jorgensen, forcing a must-save situation for Stanford's Ryan Campbell.
Campbell, who made a handful of spectacular saves en route to finishing the match with a career-best 10 stops, was unable to extend the shootout as Ellie Maughan found the back of the net to push BYU on to the third round.

BYU and Stanford entered as two of the top offenses in the nation, with Stanford trailing only the Cougars in shots per game. The pair did not disappoint in that column, with the Cardinal finishing the match with a 33-22 advantage in shots.
Pac-12 Champion Stanford, which made its 31st NCAA Tournament appearances in program history, finished the year with a 17-2-3 overall record. The Pac-12 title was the 10th in 20 seasons played under Knowles Family Director of Women's Soccer Paul Ratcliffe.
