AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – The Stanford women's fencing team closed out the season-opening Western Invitational by going undefeated on the last of two days of competition.
The Cardinal beat its three Mountain Pacific Sports Federation competitors – Air Force, Incarnate Word, and UC San Diego – and North Carolina, to finish 6-3 for fourth in the 10-team standings.
The Stanford men went 2-2 on Sunday to finish 2-6, for seventh. The Cardinal went 2-1 against MPSF foes, beating Air Force and Incarnate Word, but losing to UC San Diego.
Stanford's women's epee and foil squads each went 6-3 overall, with the foil team going 4-5.
After opening at 11-1, junior sabre specialist Joy Yun closed with a 7-2 day to finish 18-3. Her .857 winning percentage and total number of victories were the most by any Cardinal fencer, men or women. Second-best was freshman Crystal Qian, who went 8-0 on Sunday to finish 16-6 (.727).
The men's foil squad went undefeated on Sunday, with victories over Incarnate Word (9-0 score), North Carolina (5-4), Air Force (5-4, and UCSD (5-4). It finished 5-3 with freshman Sanjay Kasi leading the group with a 15-9 record (.625).
The top men's performer for Stanford was junior Donghwan Park in the sabre. Park went 16-8 overall (.667) and 6-3 on Sunday.
Men's freshmen who made their first collegiate appearances were Kasi, Connor Jeong (epee), and Luke Park (foil). Park went 14-10 (.583).
Cardinal women who made their debuts were Qian, Aditri Patil (epee), Meghana Paturu (epee), Shining Xi (sabre), and Erika Yong (sabre).
Stanford next competes at the Northwestern Duals on Feb. 4-5.
