STANFORD, Calif. – While team competition is off for a week, several Stanford gymnasts will be in action, with seven current Cardinal heading to the 2023 Winter Cup in Louisville, Ky.
The Winter Cup will be held at Freedom Hall from February 24-26.
The Senior Men's National Team will be renamed at the conclusion of Winter Cup, and performances will help determine men's and women's international assignments for winter and spring events, including the 2023 Junior World Championships in Antalya, Turkey; DTB Pokal Team Challenge and Mixed Cup in Stuttgart, Germany; and City of Jesolo Trophy in Jesolo, Italy. Winter Cup also serves as a qualifying event to the 2023 U.S. Gymnastics Championships in San Jose, Calif.
Stanford-affiliated gymnasts slated to compete include current Cardinal Jeremy Bischoff, Taylor Burkhart, Ian Gunther, Asher Hong, Ian Lasic-Ellis, Riley Loos and Khoi Young. Former Cardinal Curran Phillips and Blake Sun are also registered alongside incoming Cardinal David Shamah.
Brody Malone has already reclaimed his spot on the Senior National Team after winning the gold medal on horizontal bar at the World Championships.
Six current Stanford gymnasts are Senior National Team members entering the Winter Cup – Burkhart, Hong, Lasic-Ellis, Loos, Malone and Colt Walker. Phillips and Sun are also members, running Stanford's total Stanford-affiliated gymnasts on the 15-member team to eight. Bischoff enters the weekend as a member of the Senior Development Team.
Winter Cup competition begins Friday, February 24 at 10:30 a.m. PT with the senior men's all-around and will continue through Sunday, February 26. Saturday's senior women's competition will be broadcast live on NBC at 1 p.m. ET, and all other sessions and podium training will stream live on USA Gymnastics' YouTube channel.
