Big Win Highlights Day One

EVANSTON, Ill. – The No. 13 Stanford women's fencing team opened the Northwestern Duals with a 14-13 victory over No. 7 Cornell to highlight Cardinal performances on Saturday, the opening day of the two-day 15-school tournament.

The Cardinal women went 4-1 and the men 3-2. The women have five bouts Sunday and the men four, in their final tournament before the postseason.

Against Cornell, Stanford won the final bout in each of the three weapons, giving the Cardinal enough to pull off the upset – by Haley Koo in foil, Joy Yun in sabre, and Hanna Lee in epee.
Stanford also beat unranked Denison, Farleigh Dickinson, and Cleveland State, before losing to No. 11 Temple, 17-10.

The Cardinal men opened with victories over Cleveland State, Air Force, and Lawrence, before losing to No. 11 Boston College, 14-13, and No. 4 Notre Dame, 19-8.

Aidan Kung went 2-1 against Notre Dame, earning a 5-4 victory over All-American Stephen Ewart to close the epee competition.

The Stanford women are 10-4 overall this season and the Cardinal men are 5-8.

Stanford's two-time All-American Donghwan Park went 13-2 in men's sabre on Saturday and was the top performer among both the men's and women's teams. Freshman Sanjay Kasi (foil) and junior Kai Rayle (epee) each went 10-5 for the men.

For the Cardinal women, senior captain Liana Keesing competed for the first time since her freshman season and went a combined 5-0 in foil. Irene Yeu (epee) went 10-2, freshman Aditri Patel (epee) went 9-3, and Haley Koo (foil) went 6-1.

Stanford continues its season at home on March 11 with the NCAA West Regionals, and the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships a day later, also on The Farm.
