EVANSTON, Ill. – The Stanford women's fencing team earned second victory of the Northwestern Duals over a top-10 team, beating No. 5 Northwestern on Sunday.
The No. 13 Cardinal women went 8-2 over the two-day event, including 4-1 on Sunday, to finish tied for the second-best record among the 16-team field. They are 14-5 this season.
The Cardinal men finished 5-4 after a four-match split on Sunday. Stanford had the sixth-best record among 12 teams and is 7-10 overall.
The tournament acts as the final regular-season event before Stanford plays host to the NCAA West Regionals on March 11 and the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships on March 12.
A day after beating No. 7 Cornell, 14-13, Stanford earned another big victory, this time over the host Wildcats, 15-12. Stanford got a 6-3 victory in saber, and a 5-4 victory in epee. Northwestern edged the Cardinal in foil, 5-4.
Charlotte He, Joy Yun, and Erika Yong each went 2-1 in saber against Northwestern. He and Yong each earned victories over Northwestern All-American Sky Miller – He by 5-3 and Yong by 5-4. Irene Yeu and Aditri Patil went 2-1 in epee, and Crystal Qian went 2-1 in foil.
Patil, a freshman, went 19-5 in the tournament and Yeu went 17-6 to lead the Cardinal women.
Stanford narrowly lost to No. 6 Ohio State, 14-13. The Buckeyes, at 12-0, were the only undefeated women's team in the tournament. Jeanette Han went 3-0 in saber against Ohio State, including a 5-4 victory over Julieta Toledo, who placed sixth at the NCAA Championships last year.
The unranked Cardinal men faced one ranked opponent on Sunday, Ohio State, and fell 18-9, though Donghwan Park (saber) and Kai Rayle (epee) each went 2-1.
Park went 8-2 on Sunday to finish 21-4 in the tournament. Freshman Sanjay Kasi (foil) went 8-2 on Sunday and was 18-7 overall.
