STANFORD, Calif. – The return of Olympian Brody Malone helped boost No. 2 Stanford to men's gymnastics victories over No. 10 Cal and No. 6 Illinois on Saturday in the season home finale at Burnham Pavilion.
Malone, competing in five of the six events, was Stanford's high scorer as the Cardinal scored 410.200 points to 399.400 for Illinois, and 386.250 for Cal.
Malone, a fifth-year senior competing in his first competition this season, accounted for 69.400 points, with teammate Asher Hong next at 68.150. A seven-time NCAA individual champion, Malone scored 13.250 on pommel horse, a career-high 14.600 on still rings, 14.650 on vault, 14.100 on parallel bars, and 12.800 on the high bar.
Stanford's apparatus winners were Khoi Young on pommel horse (season-best 14.650), Malone on still rings (14.600) and Ian Lasic-Ellis on horizontal bar (13.500).
Stanford scored a 71.000 on still rings, as the Cardinal took the first five spots overall in the rankings. Malone was followed by Mark Berlaga (14.550) and Hong (14.400) in second and third, respectively.
The Cardinal floor lineup also impressed, setting a new season best at 69.200. Jeremy Bischoff led the way with a career-best 14.350 to take second. Hong finished third at 14.150.
Bischoff also took second on parallel bars with a 14.300, while senior Brandon Briones was second on vault at 14.750.
Prior to Saturday's meet, Stanford celebrated Senior Day by honoring seniors Brandon Briones, J.R. Chou, Riley Loos and Zach Martin.
Stanford concludes its regular season on March 11 at Navy, with Air Force also competing.
