CHARLESTON, S.C. - In the first regatta away from home this spring season, Stanford was perfect in the water, taking first place in the Phebe Corkran Women's Team Race. The regatta win marks Stanford's third first place finish in four contests this season.
"We were on fire this weekend, the whole team," said head sailing coach Chris Klevan. "We sailed like champions, we sailed our way and we sailed above the fray."
The Cardinal went 15-0 over the course of the regatta, taking first place in all but one of the races. Three of Stanford's 15 races featured a clean 1-2-3 sweep for the Cardinal boats.
Stanford competed against the hosts, Charleston, Jacksonville, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, South Florida, and Tulane. The Green Wave was the second-place finisher, going 11-4.
The team this weekend was comprised of skippers Michelle Lahrkamp, Ellie Harned, Hannah Freeman, Vanessa Lahrkamp, and Sophie Fisher. Harned, Patricia Gerli, Grace Austin, and Abigail Tindall took on the crew duties over the two-day competition.
"This was only the soft open for what is a long away stretch of the season," added Klevan. "The other teams have coaches too and while this is a great first step, it is only just the first step."
The Cardinal returns to action next weekend in Charleston again in the Bob Bavier Open Team Race as well as at the St. Mary's College Women's Team Race in St. Mary's City, Maryland. Stanford will compete on the road for the remained of the month before returning home to host the PCCSC Open Team Race Championship the weekend of April 8-9.
