Cardinal Falls to UCLA


LOS ANGELES – Earning its second-best regular-season road score Sunday afternoon, No. 21 Stanford fell to No. 5 UCLA, 198.175-196.825, inside Pauley Pavilion. 

The Cardinal started its day on bars, totaling a meet-best team event score of 49.300 led by senior Chloe Widner's 9.950 in the anchor position. Stanford also saw a score of 9.900 from sophomore Brenna Neault, marking the sixth straight competition the sophomore has earned a score of 9.850-or-better on the event.  Completing the Cardinal's scoring efforts was a 9.850 from freshman Claire Dean in the leadoff spot and scores of 9.800 from fifth year Madison Brunette and freshman Anna Roberts.

Stanford's second event of the day was vault, earning a team total of 49.125. Brunette's career-best matching effort of 9.850 paced the rotation, while freshman Taralyn Nguyen also recorded the same score. Widner earned a 9.825 and Neault and Roberts each totaled a score of 9.800. 

The Cardinal then took on the floor, marking a team effort of 49.250. Dean kicked the rotation off with a 9.875 and was followed by the same score from Brunette and a 9.900 from Neault. Nguyen scored a 9.825 while sophomore Katya Sander came in on a lineup change to earn a needed 9.775 to round out the rotation. 

Stanford finished the day on beam, notching a team score of 49.150. Junior Ira Alexeeva earned the Cardinal's lone 9.900 of the rotation, while Neault totaled a 9.875 and Dean earned a 9.825. Scores of 9.775 from junior Isabela Onyshko and Nguyen (a career-best total) rounded out the Stanford scoring marks. 

Sunday marked the Cardinal's final conference dual meet matchup of the season. Stanford finishes the regular season Friday, March 10, at the Haas Quad Meet against Bay-Area-foe No. 7 California, No. 15 Ohio State and No. 47 Utah State. Action is slated to begin at 7 p.m.
