LOS ANGELES – No. 7 Stanford finished its two-day trip to Los Angeles with two wins, topping RV Arizona State 3-2 and Utah 5-0 at the Pac-12 South Beach Invitational Sunday.
The Cardinal opened its day of play at rainy Mapes Beach with a 3-2 victory over the Sun Devils. Senior Maddi Kriz and Xolani Hodel recorded a two-set victory on court two to kick things off, but ASU quickly tied the match up with a win on court four. Junior Emmy Sharp and sophomore Camdyn Doucet took back the lead for Stanford with a three-set victory on court five, and freshman duo Kelly Belardi and Ashley Vincent sealed the match with a 21-18, 21-15 victory on court three.
Stanford then took on the Utes, dominating on four of five courts with two-set victories. Kriz and freshman Clarke paired up for the first time and fought off a first-set victory by Utah's Vezzani/Karich, coming back to win set two 21-15 and fight off another Utes advance in the third set to win the match with a 17-15 victory.
The Cardinal heads back to Los Angeles next weekend, competing in the Battle for Los Angeles against Cal Poly, No. 4 USC, LMU, and Florida Atlantic March 11-12.
