SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – No. 8 Stanford men's golf, behind a bogey-free 64 from Michael Thorbjornsen, sits in third place following the first round of the Western Intercollegiate at Pasatiempo Golf Club. The Cardinal shot an 11-under 339 in the play-six, count-five format.
Thorbjornsen made six birdies and 12 bogeys en route to a 6-under 66. He had four birdies on the front -- on Nos. 4, 6, 7 and 9 -- and two more on the back nine -- Nos. 13 and 15. He trails California's Aaron Du by one shot.
Stanford led the field in Par 3 scoring at 3-under, while playing the Par 4s and Par 5s in 4-under each. The Cardinal's 70 pars and 24 birdies each ranked second in the 14-team field.
California (16-under) and Oregon (15-under) sit ahead of Stanford on the leaderboard, but are well within striking distance with 36 holes remaining.
