Cardinal Drops Heartbreaker

SALT LAKE CITY – No. 5 Stanford took a 3-0 lead into the sixth inning but could not hang on and fell 4-3 to No. 25 Utah on Saturday at Dumke Family Stadium.

Regan Krause (9-4) came out of the bullpen in the third for Stanford (31-8, Pac-12 8-6) and took the loss. NiJaree Canady started the ballgame and threw 2.1 shutout innings, allowing one hit, with no walks and four strikeouts.

Offensively, the Cardinal were paced by senior Emily Schultz, who went 2-for-3 on the day with a triple and two RBI. Junior Ellee Eck furnished a noteworthy performance as well, recording her first RBI of the season off a double.

The Cardinal got on the scoreboard first off an RBI triple from Schultz to bring home Kaitlyn Lim. Stanford built its lead in the fourth off the bats of Shultz and Eck to bring the score to 3-0.

Utah tied the game in the sixth off an RBI triple and a home run. The Utes won the game via walk-off in the seventh to take the series.

The Cardinal will finish of the series on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. PT.
