SALT LAKE CITY – No. 5 Stanford brought a 4-3 lead into the seventh inning but could not hold on and fell 5-4 to No. 25 Utah on Sunday at Dumke Family Stadium.
Alana Vawter (14-5) started and took the loss in the circle for Stanford (31-9, Pac-12 8-7) with four strikeouts and allowing three earned runs.
Offensively, the Cardinal were paced by Allie Clements, who went 2-for-4 on the day with a double. Vawter put together a noteworthy day at the dish as well with an RBI double of her own. Senior Sydney Steele also helped out, putting together two hits in three trips to the plate and adding an RBI.
Stanford was trailing 3-0 in the fifth inning when Emily Young got hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to get the Cardinal on the board. Aly Kaneshiro followed that with a sacrifice fly to score Steele.
Vawter tied the game in the sixth with her RBI double and Steele brought her home with a shot down the right field line. The Cardinal were unable to hold the lead, as Utah scored two for another walk-off win.
The Cardinal will wrap up its stint in Utah with a day game against BYU at 12 p.m. PT.
