Annabella Bachmann Named Scholar-Athlete of the Year

LOWELL, Ore. – Stanford senior Annabelle Bachmann was named Pac-12 Women's Rowing Scholar-Athlete of the Year on Sunday.

Bachmann is the Cardinal's seventh Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year and third straight honor, following Nicole Pofcher (2022), Grace McGinley (2021), Naomi Cornman (2015), Ali Fauci (2014), Mariele Higgins (2012), and Erika Roddy (2011). 

The Ingelheim, Germany native is a Human Biology major with a specialization in Microbes and Immunity and carries a cumulative 3.977 GPA. 

Bachmann is a stalwart for the Stanford women's rowing program, aiding the Cardinal to its runner-up finish at the 2021 NCAA Championships in the second varsity eight. Last season, Bachmann helped the team and third varsity eight to conference titles at the Pac-12 Championships, the Cardinal's first since 2014, rowing in the second seat. Throughout the 2023 campaign, Bachmann has competed in Stanford's first varsity eight boat, rowing in the sixth seat and helping lead the boat and program to its second consecutive Pac-12 title. 

Bachmann is also a member of the German National Team, competing in multiple international competitions during the summers of her Stanford career. She most recently raced as a part of Germany's women's varsity eight boat at the 2021 U23 European Rowing Championships, earning a silver medal, following up a gold-medal finish at the same competition in 2020. 

On dry land, Bachmann is a model student and has worked in multiple labs throughout Stanford's campus. Bachmann most recently was an undergraduate research assistant at the Lauren O'Connell Lab, participating in research on tree frogs, helping perform behavioral experiments and supporting the video analysis of the experiments. Additionally, Bachmann has spent time as an undergraduate research assistant at Stanford Hospital, observing surgical procedures, pain management, nerve blockers and inpatient care.

The Pac-12 selects Scholar Athletes of the Year in 24 sponsored sports: baseball, men's basketball, women's basketball, men's cross country, women's cross country, beach volleyball, football, men's golf, women's golf, women's gymnastics, women's lacrosse, men's rowing, women's rowing, men's soccer, women's soccer, softball, men's swimming and diving, women's swimming and diving, men's tennis, women's tennis, men's track and field, women's track and field, women's volleyball, and wrestling.

The nomination criteria are: senior (in athletics eligibility) on track to receive a degree, cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher, participation in at least 50 percent of the scheduled contest in the sport, and a minimum of one year in residence at the institution. 

Each Pac-12 institution nominates one individual per sport, and the winners are selected by a committee of Pac-12 staff members at the conclusion of each sport's regular season. The athletic accomplishments of the nominees are a consideration in the voting for the award.
