STANFORD, Calif. - The Cardinal men's, women's and beach volleyball teams were recognized by the United States Marine Corp (USMC) and the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) today as recipients of the AVCA Team Academic Award.
Stanford is the only collegiate institution in the nation, spanning across all divisions, to have each of its programs (men's, women's and beach) earn the prestigious academic honor.
The beach team boasted a 3.644 GPA for the 2022-23 academic year with 20 of its 23 student-athletes recording a 3.30-or-better. The men's team recorded a 3.568 GPA in 2022-23 with 16 of 18 student-athletes earning a 3.30-or-better, while the women's indoor team turned in a 3.499 team GPA with 12 of the team's 18 players carrying a 3.30-or-better.
The men's team has now earned the AVCA Team Academic Award for a fourth consecutive season, marking the 12th time in program history. The Cardinal is the only MPSF squad to earn the award in 2022-23 and also achieved honor roll status (top 20 percent team GPA in the nation).
It marks the ninth consecutive season the women's indoor team has earned the AVCA Team Academic Award, and the 17th overall. The women's indoor team is one of five Pac-12 schools to earn the team award.
It is also the ninth straight season the beach team has received the honor. The beach squad is one of eight Pac-12 teams to be recognized.
The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.
