Strong Exhibition Showing

STANFORD, Calif. - Hitting the competitive pitch for the first time during the 2023 season, Stanford defeated Pacific 9-1 in an exhibition match from Cagan Stadium on Friday night.

Fifth-year player Katie Duong and sophomore Jasmine Aikey each scored a brace, while Elise Evans, Shae Harvey, Maya Doms, Amalie Pianim and Lumi Kostmayer chipped in one goal apiece. Doms added an assist to her line, while Catherine Paulson and Julia Leontini each had two assists.

Aikey, named a United Soccer Coaches midfielder to watch on Friday morning, got the scoring started in the second minute as she slid a shot past Pacific goalkeeper Libby Davy after settling a pass from Leontini.

The Tigers would draw even in the seventh minute as Anaya Shelton scored on a free kick, but the Cardinal took control of the match the rest of the way - finishing the contest with a 23-4 advantage in shots.

Leontini and C. Paulson each had key passes that freed up space for Pianim in the 17th minute as the redshirt freshman scored the eventual game-winner.

Evans would hammer home a goal in the 24th minute before Kostmayer was taken down in the box and converted from the spot in the 38th. Stanford's final goal of the first half was the first of the day from Duong as she received a pass from freshman Joelle Jung and found the back of the net to take a 5-1 lead into halftime.

The second half saw Stanford play to a 15-1 shot advantage while scoring four times. Doms got the second-half tallies started in the 55th minute as she slid to direct a cross from C. Paulson past the Tigers keeper to make it 6-1. Aikey followed with her second of the match in the 66th minute, followed by Harvey's first goal in a Cardinal uniform in the 75th. Duong capped the scoring in the 82nd minute, making good on a pass from Astrid Wheeler to advance the tally to 9-1.

Senior Ryan Campbell got the start and played the first 45 minutes in goal for the Cardinal, making one save in the first half of play. Junior Haley Craig took over in the second half, making a save on the only Pacific shot in the final 45 minutes.

The Cardinal will open the 2023 regular season on August 17 when it visits San Diego for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
