STANFORD, Calif. -- Stanford Athletics has announced the hiring of Lizzy Houston as associate head coach of the Cardinal's women's lightweight rowing team.
Houston comes from Boston College, where she served as assistant women's coach and head novice coach for the Eagles.
"Lizzy Houston came highly recommended by both coaching peers and Stanford lightweight alums, so it was no coincidence that she stood out throughout the search process," said women's rowing head coach, Derek Byrnes. "Lizzy has a great vision for what college athletics should be about and a clear energy for the sport of rowing. I'm excited for what the future holds for the lightweight team. They are well positioned to be a force in the sport."
Houston was the primary coach for the third and fourth varsity eights, leading the 3V8 to seventh at the 2022 and 2023 Atlantic Coast Conference championship regattas.
Among her responsibilities at B.C. were on-campus recruiting, design and implementation of walk-on tryouts, and novice team selection. Houston assisted the head coach in areas such as logistics, training plans, recruiting strategy and equipment management.
This summer, Houston coached at US Rowing's boys and girls Olympic Development Program camps in Chattanooga, Tennessee, developing and identifying junior athletes as part of the High Performance and National Team pipelines.
"I'm honored to join Stanford Athletics as the associate head coach of women's lightweight rowing," Houston said. "I'd like to thank Derek Byrnes and the Stanford Athletics staff for this opportunity and express my sincerest gratitude to the mentors who have played a pivotal role in my coaching journey.
The Stanford lightweight program has a strong history, winning five consecutive Commissioner's Cups as the Intercollegiate Rowing Association's lightweight team champion from 2015-19.
"My commitment is to nurture and fortify Stanford's legacy by continuing to build a team that embodies strength, resilience, and an unwavering pursuit of excellence on and off the water," Houston said. "We are well-positioned to carry forward Stanford's tradition of success, with our sights set firmly on a future of triumphs and achievements."
Houston, a USRowing Level 2 Coach, graduated from Hobart and William Smith colleges in 2019 with a double major of arts in media and society, and English.
As a competitor with the Vesper Boat Club, she won the under-23 8+ at the Royal Canadian Henley and the senior/elite 8+ at the USRowing Club Nationals. She also rowed with the William Smith varsity 8+at the NCAA Division III championships.
Houston rowed in the New York Athletic Club's under-23 program for a number of years and for the Riverside Boat Club since 2019.
