Overtime Heartbreaker in Maine

ORONO, Maine – It was a back-and-forth battle on Sunday afternoon at the Maine Field Hockey Complex, a contest that ultimately did not fall Stanford's way as the Cardinal dropped a heartbreaker in double overtime, 5-4. Stanford falls to 2-6 on the season (0-2 in America East play), while the Black Bears pull even at 4-4.

Scout Butler highlighted the scoresheet for Stanford with a pair of goals on the day, with freshman Star Horlock and Esther Pottebaum rounding out the scoring as they each found the back of the net for their first career goals. Horlock also added an assist on the day along with Anna Ghuliani and Haley Mossmer.

"So much heart in today's game. I was really proud of our fight and our ability to problem solve and calculate risks going forward," head coach Roz Ellis said after the game. "It's never easy to lose. Our mission continues and we will choose to grow from the wins and the losses."

Maine kicked off the high scoring affair with a pair of goals in the first five minutes to take an early 2-0 advantage, but Star Horlock put Stanford on the board late in the period with a nice backhand that snuck past the keeper.

The Cardinal added two more in the second period to take a 3-2 lead into the break with three unanswered goals. Scout Butler found the cage on a textbook corner play, before Esther Pottebaum gave Stanford the lead on a tip in off a Mossmer shot attempt.

Maine would reclaim the lead in the second half with two straight goals and carried the one goal advantage late into the fourth quarter, however the Cardinal would draw a penalty stroke with 15 seconds left and Butler would bury it for her second goal of the game to head to overtime. After ten scoreless minutes in the first overtime period, Maine would convert in the second extra frame to earn the walk-off win.

Stanford returns home next week with an in-state conference showdown against UC Davis on Friday at 1 p.m. CT.
