STANFORD, Calif. - No. 1 Stanford fell to Oregon State on Sunday, 2-1 at Cagan Stadium. It marked Stanford's first loss of the season and the first time allowing more than one goal this season.
Stanford moves to 4-1-1 and 0-1-1 in Pac-12 play while Oregon State improves to 4-2-1 and 1-0-1 in conference.
"A really disappointing loss," said The Knowles Family Director of Men's Soccer Jeremy Gunn. "Overall a disappointing performance. We just didn't execute today."
Oregon State scored first, jumping ahead in the 21st minute. But Stanford responded, with Jackson Kiil netting his third goal of the season to knot the game at one. He was assisted on the play by both Shane de Flores and Fletcher Bank in the 30th minute.
"We didn't pass the ball well enough and we didn't connect in the fluent way we normally do," added Gunn. "That stopped us from being as good attacking-wise today."
The game stayed even into the break and well into the second half. In the 81st minute, Oregon State scored again.
"The bottom line is that the whole game was decided by one player," said Gunn. "Logan Farrington completely won them the game, so we can't really complain because we got what we deserved today."
Throughout the 90 minutes, Stanford held the edge on shots, launching 11 to Oregon State's nine. The Cardinal also earned six corners to the Beavers' four.
Stanford returns to action on Friday, facing Saint Mary's at 6 p.m. at Cagan Stadium.
