STANFORD, Calif. – Freshman Eleana Yu made a run to the top-flight semifinals as the Cardinal wrapped up its second weekend of action this quarter during the Cal Fall Invitational in Berkeley.
Appearing in her first collegiate action, Yu was seeded third and beat Arianna Stavropoulos (UC Davis) in the round of 32 (6-0, 6-0) Kennedy Robinson (Nevada) in the round of 16 (6-0, 6-4) and Carolina Piferi (Fresno State) in the quarterfinals (6-0, 6-2) before falling to Cal's top-seeded and eventual champion Katja Wiersholm (6-2, 6-3) in the semifinals.
Seventh-seeded India Houghton also made a run to the top-flight quarterfinals before losing to fourth-seeded Mao Mushika (California) 7-5, 6-3 on Saturday. Houghton beat Jacque Dunyon (BYU) to open her weekend, 6-2, 6-4, and Jenna Gordon (Santa Clara) in the round of 16.
In the gold draw, Emma Sun beat Win Ka Lin (BYU) 6-0, 7-6 (5) and Maria Antonova (Santa Clara) 6-0, 6-2 before falling to fifth-seeded Makenna Thiel (California) in the round of 16, 7-6 (1), 6-2. Sun also beat Stefanie Silva (Saint Mary's) in an extra singles match on Sunday, 1-6, 6-3 (10-1).
Valecnia Xu and Yu were the No. 4 seed in top-flight doubles and made a run to the semis, beating Long Beach State's Peppi Ramstedt and Rhonda Cook, 8-5, and Nevada's Lea Cakarevic and Amahee Charrier, 8-4, before falling to California's Hannah Viller Moeller and Mushika, 8-4.
Sun was teamed up with Dartmouth graduate Chidimma Okpara in the gold draw and won a match against UC Davis' Olive and Daisy Maunupau, 8-7 (2).
