STANFORD, Calif. - No. 3 Stanford led wire-to-wire in a 13-11 victory over No. 8 Long Beach State on Thursday night at Avery Aquatic Center, representing the Cardinal's fourth win in five games.
Riley Pittman produced four goals on six shots and was one of five players with multi-goal performances for the Cardinal, which avenged a 12-10 loss to Long Beach State in the season opener.
Stanford (12-5, 2-2 MPSF) continued its late-season surge, knocking off Long Beach State (14-8, 1-2 Big West) in the first of three straight games against nonconference opponents to close out its home schedule.
Christopher Arakelian, CJ Indart, Jackson Painter and Ethan Parrish each scored twice for the Cardinal, which also received a 12-save effort from Griffen Price in goal.
Leading 3-1 after the first period, Arakelian extended Stanford's advantage to 4-1 at the 4:49 mark of the second quarter.
Long Beach State countered with back-to-back goals before Indart and Pittman scored goals in the final two minutes, giving Stanford a 6-3 edge at halftime.
The Beach erupted for six goals in the third quarter but the Cardinal did enough to maintain an 11-9 advantage through three.
After Long Beach State crept to within one goal twice in the final stanza, Arakelian's second score iced the game with 33 seconds remaining.
Stanford returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 22, hosting No. 7 UC Davis on Senior Day. Fans are encouraged to arrive in time for the Senior Day ceremony, scheduled to begin at 11:45 a.m., and stick around postgame for an autograph session in Avery Plaza.
