Cardinal Conclude First Round of Intercollegiate

Leaderboard Opens in a new window

STANFORD, Calif. — With incredible support from the golf community, the Stanford Intercollegiate, presented by Dr. Condoleezza Rice, got underway on Friday. With the Cardinal once again going by the slogan #PlayforHer and raising money for breast cancer research, there was an exciting energy around Stanford Golf Course all day long. Stanford made its mark on the first day by finishing at +2 with a 286, good for sixth place.

Kelly Xu was the top performer for the Card on Friday, the lone Stanford golfer to score under par in round one. Xu was right around par all day, but started her day with a birdie on the tenth hole, and added her second birdie on 16. With the exception of a bogey on 18, she would make par the rest of the way for a 70, which keeps her just inside the top-10.

A trio of Cardinal were clustered at the +1 mark, but they got there in different ways. Megha Ganne was steady throughout, starting her day off well with a birdie on 12 and again on the par-5 first hole, which put her at even through 10 holes. She then had two bogeys and one birdie the rest of the way to finish one over. Paula Martin Sampedro was +3 until the final three holes, where she birdied on 7 and 9 (including a chip-in from the bunker on 9), finishing strong for a +1. Sadie Englemann was +5 just eight holes into the day, but she had the best finish to the round. She recorded birdies on her final four holes of the round, the longest streak of the day by any golfer in the field.

A pair of Pac-12 teams sit atop the leaderboard after Friday's action. UCLA enjoyed a great opening round, shooting -10 for a 274 to lead SoCal rival USC by five strokes. Texas (-4) and Virginia (-1) are the only other schools under par through 18 holes.

The Stanford Intercollegiate rolls on Saturday, with Stanford set to tee off at 7:30 am on the first tee. The Cardinal will once again be paired with California during its second day on the course. Play wraps up on Sunday with a shotgun start at 8:30 am. Individuals can continue to support the PlayforHer fundraiser by clicking HERE.
