Cardinal Takes Down Colorado

YouTube Opens in a new window

BOULDER, Colo. – Trailing 1-0 following a Colorado goal in the 14th minute, No. 3 Stanford (11-0-1, 4-0-0 Pac-12) responded with three unanswered goals, including two in the final five minutes of the first half, to defeat No. 25 Colorado (10-3-0, 2-2-0 Pac-12) 3-1 in Pac-12 play on Thursday night from Prentup Field.

Colorado's Shyra James put the Buffaloes on the board first with her 11th goal of the season, receiving a pass from Ava Priest and sliding a left-footed shot that was concealed by the Stanford defense into the back of the net.

Unfazed by the early deficit, Stanford's offense continued to push forward, finally breaking through on a goal from Jasmine Aikey. Aikey, who now owns a team-best six goals, received a back-heel pass from Lumi Kostmayer before dribbling toward goal and bending a right-footed shot that beat Colorado's Jordan Nytes to the far upper 90 of the goal.

With the equalizer on the board, Stanford struck again in the final minute of the first half when freshman Joelle Jung settled an attempted clearance off a Stanford corner kick with her knee and laced a right-footed shot into the upper corner of the net for the game-winner and her third goal of the year.

The Cardinal continued to control the pace of the match in the second half, adding an insurance goal in the 62nd minute as Erica Grilione spun and dribbled toward the end line before sending a ball across the box to find Maya Dom's for a header. The goal was Doms' fifth of the season – trailing only Aikey atop Stanford's scoring list.

The Cardinal will conclude the road trip on Sunday, traveling to Utah to face the Utes at 12 p.m. PT.
