Stanford Drops Battle to Santa Clara

STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford men's basketball was tripped up for the first time this season, falling to Santa Clara on Tuesday evening, 89-77.

Maxime Raynaud led Stanford with a career-best 26 points, giving him his second outing of 20 or more points in the last three games, while Andrej Stojakovic scored a career-best 18 points and Michael Jones chipped in 14. Jared Bynum, who entered the night leading the Pac-12 in assists, scored eight points to go with seven helpers.

The Cardinal offense was firing on all cylinders early, with the home team racing out to a 28-16 lead over the first eight minutes. Michael Jones hit a trio of early 3-pointers, while Stojakovic scored nine straight to give the Cardinal its biggest lead of the game. Stanford withstood a Broncos (3-0) run, and, led by seven consecutive points by Raynaud late in the period, led at the intermission, 46-44.

Santa Clara regained the lead at the 16:25 mark in the second half. A majority of the period was spent with the game decided by one possession, and the Broncos made all six of their clutch free throws late in the game to seal the result.

Stanford closes its four-game homestand on Friday, Nov. 17 at 6 p.m. against Eastern Washington. The game will air on Pac-12 Network.
