AUSTIN, Texas – Freshman Rex Maurer captured the 500-yard freestyle on Thursday and the Cardinal earned another victory, in the 400 medley relay at the Texas Hall of Fame Swimming Invitational.
On the second day of the four-day competition, the Stanford men earned their first championship final victories.
Maurer's time of 4:11.88 was a season best by more than seconds over his pre-meet best. He shattered that in the prelims with a 4:16.70 as the top qualifier at the At Lee & Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center.
In the final, Maurer led from the first 50. After his opening 22.89, Mauer swam between 25.19 and 25.88 for each 50 over the next 400. He closed in 24.23 to finish only 1.14 behind the 'A' standard.
The medley relay team of Rex Maurer, Ethan Dang, Rafael Gu, and Andres Dupont clocked a 'B' standard of 3:06.13 to edge USC by 0.48.
In the 200 individual medley, older brother Luke Maurer was second to Will Modglin of Texas in the final. Maurer was timed in 1:42.89 in his first race at that distance this season, earning a 'B' standard for his efforts.
In the 50 free, Jonathan Tan was Stanford's top placer, taking third in 19.44, for another 'B' standard.
The Texas Invitational continues Friday with six men's finals. Also, the three-day USC Diving Invitational begins with competition in the three-meter springboard.
