Fifth in Match Race Nationals

ICSA Match Race Championship Results Opens in a new window

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Stanford took fifth in its first national championship regatta of the year at the ICSA Match Race Championship over the weekend.

"Congratulations to Brown University," said head sailing coach Chris Klevan. "They sailed a great event. Our team at the Match Race Nationals was young and hungry."

In the round robin portion, Stanford came in fifth with a 5-4 record, the same record as Charleston. The five victories came against Chicago, Tulane, Jacksonville, Navy, and Charleston.

The Cardinal advanced to the Gold Group, finishing fifth again with one win over Charleston. Stanford's regatta ended in the quarterfinal round, dropping two of three races against the eventual champion, Brown.

"We sailed at times like freshmen yet, a great potential is there," added Klevan. "We need to capitalize on that. I expect them to come back next year better because they will work to become the team they want to be."

Thomas Sitzmann led the charge for Stanford as the skipper, with Luke Woodworth, Jack Baldwin, and Alice Schmid serving as crews. All four of Stanford's sailors are underclassmen, three freshmen and Baldwin, a sophomore.

The Cardinal's fall postseason continues next weekend with the ICSA Singlehanded Championships hosted by Tulane in New Orleans.
