Maurer Wins Pac-12 Monthly Honor

STANFORD, Calif. – In his first month as a collegiate athlete, Stanford freshman Rex Maurer already has made an impact on the Cardinal men's swimming program and was recognized Tuesday as the Pac-12 Swimmer of the Month for October.

In three meets -- duals against Pittsburgh and UC Santa Barbara, and a non-scoring competition against Cal – Maurer has earned seven individual victories and one in a relay, and achieved NCAA 'B' standards in four events.

Maurer, from Pasadena, ranks No. 2 among collegians this season in the 400-yard individual medley (3:44.70), sixth in the 200 freestyle (1:33.88), 15th in the 500 free (4:19.45), 16th in the 1,000 free (9:02.75), 34th in the 100 backstroke (47.09), and 37th in the 50 back (21.93).

In his collegiate debut, Maurer won the 100 back (47.09) and 500 free (4:19.45) in 'B' standard times. He also joined his older brother Luke Maurer in winning the 200 medley relay while helping the Cardinal to a 179-116 victory over Pittsburgh at Avery Aquatic Center.

In a 165-88 victory over visiting UCSB, Rex Maurer won the 200 free (1:33.88) and 200 IM (3:44.70) while hitting 'B' standards. And in the Triple Distance Meet against Cal in Berkeley, Maurer swept the three distance freestyle races, winning the 200 free (1:38.44), 500 free (4:22.72), and 1,000 free (9:02.75).

Maurer and the Cardinal next compete in the Texas Invitational November 15-18 in Austin.
