Stanford Falls at Virginia Tech

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Sophomore Daniel Cardenas avenged an early season loss, but No. 16 Stanford fell at No. 10 Virginia Tech, 29-7, Sunday, at Cassell Coliseum.

Stanford (2-1) dropped its first dual of the season to the Hokies (3-1), winning just two of the eight bouts.

Cardenas, who is ranked No. 8 at 157 pounds, registered a 15-7 major decision over seventh-ranked Bryce Andonian, who defeated the sophomore with a major decision of his own on Dec. 2 at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational. Cardenas gave up an early takedown, but responded with a pair to lead 7-4 after the first.

Andonian went down to start the second and cut the lead to 7-5 with an escape. Cardenas went to work, scoring his third takedown of the match, and led 10-6 going into the final period. After tallying an escape, Cardenas recorded another takedown and secured riding time for the win. The Arvada, Colorado, native improves to 10-2 overall and 3-0 in duals this season.

Senior Jason Miranda put the Cardinal on the scoreboard first with a 3-0 decision over Mac Church at 141 pounds. Ranked No. 27 nationally, Miranda rode out Church in the second, picking up a point for stalling by the Hokie. Miranda then scored an escape to start the third and finished with 1:56 of riding time. The senior moves to 5-2 on the season and 2-0 in duals.

Stanford is back in action on Tuesday at the Campbell Duals in Buies Creek, North Carolina. The Cardinal will take on Purdue at 10 a.m. PT, host Campbell at Noon PT and North Dakota State at 2 p.m. PT.
