Two in the Top-Five

Day Two Results Opens in a new window

MINNEAPOLIS - Jack Ryan earned third place on the 1-meter and Ron Polonsky took fifth place in the 200 IM to highlight day two of the NCAA Championships. It marked Polonsky's ninth All-America award and Ryan's second.

Following two days of action, Stanford sits in eighth place in the competition with 74 points.

Polonsky qualified for the A final of the 200 IM during prelims, swimming a 1:41.14, good for seventh place. He moved up two spots in finals to fifth with a 1:40.62, his best time of the year and just half a second off his best time from a year ago.

The sophomore Olympian has already added three All-America selections to his resume this year, after helping the two opening-day relays to top-16 finishes before his top-five swim today.

Jack Ryan was dominant in the diving pool, finishing prelims at third overall with a score of 386.70. In finals, Ryan blew his prelims score out of the water, tallying a 429.45, just 14 points behind the first place finisher. 

It marked the highest score on the 1-meter of Ryan's Stanford career.

Stanford concluded the finals session with a 14th-place finish in the 200 free relay. Andrei Minakov, Luke Maurer, Rafael Gu, and Jonathan Affeld combined in the event, recording a 1:16.44.

10 Cardinal competed in the preliminary session on Thursday, beginning with Preston Forst and Gabe Machado in the 500 free. Forst took 36th and Machado earned 38th.

Along with Polonsky in the 200 IM were Rick Mihm and Josh Zuchowski. The pair finished 31st and 50th, respectively.

The 50 free was led by Luke Maurer who took 21st with a personal best time of 19.28, the eighth-fastest 50 free in program history. Rafael Gu and Andres Dupont joined Maurer in the event, earning 48th and 50th.

Jack Ryan was joined in the 1-meter competition by Peyton Donald who earned 40th overall.

Stanford returns to action for the third day of the NCAA Championships tomorrow beginning with prelims at 10 a.m. The Cardinal will compete in the 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back, and 3-meter.
