STANFORD, Calif. — Troy Clardy, a familiar face on The Farm who has also continued to gain national exposure, has been named the lead play-by-play radio voice for the Stanford football and men's basketball teams, as announced Monday by Jaquish & Kenninger Director of Athletics Bernard Muir.
Clardy, who will make his debut behind the mic on KNBR 1050 AM when the Cardinal visits Hawai'i on Sept. 1 in its football season opener, brings nearly 30 years of experience to the booth while having served in a variety of roles in radio and television.
Clardy will be joined alongside veteran radio personality and color analyst John Platz, whose three decades of broadcasting experience include play-by-play, color commentary and sideline reporting at various times for football, men's basketball and baseball at Stanford.
"We are pleased to continue our long-standing partnership with Troy Clardy and look forward to hearing him bring unmatched passion and energy into this new role," said Muir. "Troy has gained a wealth of experience through a variety of regional and national assignments while continually evolving his multi-dimensional skill set. Troy has always been a loyal ambassador for Stanford Athletics and is uniquely positioned to share the stories of our student-athletes and programs."
No stranger to the Bay Area or to Stanford, Clardy recently completed his fifth year of play-by-play for Stanford Athletics livestreams while calling 11 different sports. In addition to serving as Stanford's fill-in sideline reporter for four seasons, including the 2016 Rose Bowl, Clardy is also entering his 10th season with the Pac-12 Network as a play-by-play voice, calling regular season and postseason events in football, basketball, baseball, soccer and field hockey.
Enthusiastic and versatile, Clardy's national portfolio has increased steadily over the past year, recently completing his first season as a play-by-play voice for NCAA and NFL games on Compass Media Networks. Clardy, who in 2022 received Big 10 and SEC assignments while calling four NFL games in the NFC West, will continue in this role for the 2023 campaign.
Clardy has also called men's and women's basketball play-by-play for the WCC Network, the 2022 Junior League Softball World Series for ESPN and play-by-play for men's basketball, baseball and softball for the University of Pittsburgh following five years as a producer at ESPN.
"As a Stanford graduate, this is more than an honor; it's a dream come true," said Clardy, who graduated from Stanford with a Bachelor of Arts in Urban Studies and has been covering Bay Area sports since his graduation. "It has been such fun covering Stanford Athletics over the years from Rose Bowls to College Cups while connecting with Cardinal fans across the globe. To now be also trusted with the duties of telling the stories of these student-athletes and representing this University and athletic department in this role is truly special. We're going to have fun. Can't wait to talk to you from Stanford Stadium, Maples Pavilion and beyond!"
A point guard and two-time varsity letterwinner on the Stanford men's basketball team from 1982-84, Platz was the radio play-by-play voice of the NCAA champion Stanford baseball team during the 1988 and 1989 seasons.
In addition to serving as an emcee for large-scale events and a member of the Stanford Athletics Hall of Fame selection committee, Platz is the author of 100 Years of Stanford Men's Basketball, which was published in 2015 and chronicles the first century of the sport, and Farm Foundation: An Illustrated History of Stanford Football, scheduled to be published this fall as a historical comprehensive retrospective of the football program.
A 1984 Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Stanford with a degree in economics, Platz earned a J.D. (law) and M.B.A. degrees at Stanford in 1989.
