Trojans Outlast Cardinal in Shootout

LOS ANGELES – Capping the end of its final Pac-12 road trip to Los Angeles, Stanford men's basketball fell in a high-scoring affair to USC, 93-79, at the Galen Center. Stanford moves to 2-2 in Pac-12 play with the result.

Michael Jones led the way with 23 points, making eight of his nine field goal attempts with a perfect 5-for-5 mark from 3-point range, while Brandon Angel pitched in 18 points while going 3-for-3 from beyond the arc. Angel added five rebounds and a game-high six assists, while Spencer Jones was also in double figures with 12. Maxime Raynaud secured double-digit rebounds for the fifth time this season, grabbing 10.

Stanford shot 52.7 percent as a team and 59.1 percent from 3-point range, assisting on 24 of its 29 field goals. Spencer Jones moved into 11th place on the Pac-12's all-time 3-point list, passing former Arizona State guard Rihards Kuksiks with his second triple of the game.

The Cardinal and Trojans traded one-basket leads in the first half, with Stanford using eight early points from Angel to take a 17-14 lead through eight minutes of play. USC responded with a run, and led at the intermission by four, 39-35.

Spencer Jones scored Stanford's first seven points of the second half, and nine of its first 11. Stanford responded to a USC run with a 10-0 run of their own midway through the period, tying the scoring at 61-61 after 3-pointers from Angel and Benny Gealer and layups from Kanaan Carlyle and Michael Jones. USC regained the lead, and clinched the result in the closing minutes.

Stanford concludes its three-game road trip on Thursday, Jan. 11 at 8 p.m. against Oregon State. The contest will be broadcast on ESPN2.
