Season Opening Sweep

STANFORD, Calif. – Led by Will Rottman and Moses Wagner, No. 8 Stanford opened its 2024 campaign with a 25-19, 25-13, 25-20 sweep over No. 10 Loyola Chicago, Sunday, at Burnham Pavilion.

Stanford (1-0) hit .429 as a team, while holding Loyola Chicago (1-2) to a .217 clip. The Cardinal finished with 24 digs, 6.5 blocks and seven aces.

Rottman, a fifth-year from Santa Barbara, tallied eight kills on .316 hitting, five digs, two aces and two blocks, while Wagner, a sophomore from San Jose, had eight kills on a .545 attack percentage, three digs, two blocks and an ace.
 


Stanford, which never trailed in the first, hit a blistering .786 in the opening set, totaling 12 kills on 14 swings with just one miscue.

Fifth-year middle blocker Nathaniel Gates was a perfect 7-0-7 (1.000) offensively and had a team-high three blocks. Redshirt senior middle blocker Ethan Hill added four kills on .600 hitting and a pair of blocks.
 


Fifth-year setter Nathan Lietzke controlled the offense with 21 assists to go with two digs, two kills and an ace. Sophomore setter Theoren Brouillette subbed in in all three sets, totaling four assists, two digs and an ace.

Senior Luke Turner made his debut at libero for the Cardinal, totaling six digs, two assists and a kill. Fifth-year outside hitter Kevin Lamp added two kills, two digs, a block and two aces, including one on match-point.

Stanford won its third straight season opener under 18th-year head coach John Kosty, The Birkhofer Family Head Men's Volleyball Coach.

Loyola Chicago was led by redshirt senior Colton Brooks, a native of nearby Pleasanton, who had a match-high nine kills, two digs, a block and an ace.

The Cardinal and Ramblers will meet again on Monday in Maples Pavilion. First serve is scheduled for 5 p.m. on Pac-12 Networks.
