Stanford Wins Fifth Straight

STANFORD, Calif. – No. 16 Stanford won eight of 10 bouts, downing No. 25 Cal Poly, 30-9, on Sunday in Maples Pavilion.

The Cardinal (10-2), which posted four wins by bonus points, won its fifth consecutive dual and improves to 3-0 in the Pac-12. Cal Poly dropped to 5-5 overall and 1-4 in the Pac-12.

Redshirt senior Jaden Abas registered the biggest win of the day, knocking off No. 5 Chance Lamer at 149 pounds. Ranked No. 21, Abas scored a first-period takedown and notched an escape to start the third to hold off Lamer, 4-3. The San Diego native has won a season-best five consecutive matches, improving to 13-6 overall and 7-1 in duals.
 


Redshirt freshman Jack Darrah turned in his first fall of the season at 184 pounds, pinning Kendall La Rosa in 4:19. Darrah is now 12-5 on the season, including 8-2 in duals. 
 


Ranked No. 30 at 141 pounds, Jason Miranda tallied Stanford's first bonus-point win of the afternoon, shutting out Abe Hinrichsen, 12-0. At 14-7 overall, Miranda now has eight wins by bonus points this season.

The eighth-ranked wrestler in the nation at 157 pounds, Daniel Cardenas picked up his eighth win over a ranked opponent this season with an 11-2 major decision over No. 32 Legend Lamer. He moves to 22-4 overall and 11-1 in duals. Sixteen of his 22 wins on the season have come by bonus points.
 


Redshirt freshman Hunter Garvin, ranked No. 25 at 165 pounds, also tallied a win by major decision, defeating Michael Goldfeder 17-3. Garvin racked up five takedowns, an escape and the riding time point to improve to 17-8 overall and 7-3 in duals.

No. 16 Nico Provo opened the dual with an 8-2 decision over No. 30 Dom Mendez at 125 pounds. He is now 14-4 overall with five wins over ranked opponents.

Graduate Dom LaJoie followed with a 9-4 decision over Ty Chandler at 133 pounds. After giving up an early takedown, LaJoie scored the next eight points to take control of the match. He moves to 10-7 overall and 5-4 in duals.

No. 17 Nick Stemmet capped off the scoring for Stanford with an 8-1 decision over Jared Priest at 197 pounds. The senior leads the team with 26 wins this season.
 


Closing out the dual, senior Peter Ming pushed No. 23 Trevor Tinker to overtime, ultimately falling 11-8 in sudden victory.

Stanford closes out the dual portion of its season next weekend, traveling to No. 24 Arizona State on Saturday before hosting No. 21 Oregon State on Sunday for Senior Day.
