Cardinal Tops No. 2 Tennessee, Falls to No. 3 Texas on Day Two at Clearwater

CLEARWATER, Fla. – The Cardinal topped No. 2 Tennessee 1-0 today, finishing the day 1-1 at the Clearwater Invitational and moving to 5-4 on the season. The win is Stanford's second ranked win of the young season, after defeating No. 24 San Diego State on Feb. 8. The scoreless performance is also the team's third shutout of the season in just eight games.

The day opened with Stanford's 1-0 win over the second-ranked Volunteers. Freshman Ava Gall struck for the game's lone run in the bottom of the first inning, crushing a double into right field to drive in sophomore Taryn Kern. The one run lead held up thanks to a dominant outing by sophomore NiJaree Canady.

Canady entered with the bases loaded and two outs in the top of the first, and went on to allow just two hits in 6.1 innings. Canady struck out five and walked just one batter en route to her second win of the season.

Senior Regan Krause combined for the shutout with Canady, retiring the first two batters of the game before three singles loaded the bases.

Then in the evening game, the Cardinal fell to No.3 Texas. The Longhorns struck first, with a three-run shot to take the lead in the bottom of the first inning.

The Card was able to quickly answer with a home run of their own. Freshman Jade Berry smashed her first collegiate homer over the right-field fence to score sophomore Emily Jones and cut the lead to just one run at 3-2.

Texas added five runs in the third and one in the fifth to make it a 9-2 final score.

Stanford is back tomorrow with the team's final game in Clearwater, taking on Minnesota at 10:00 a.m. PT on ESPN+.
