TEMPE, Ariz. – In a back-and-forth battle, No. 16 Stanford came up just short, falling at No. 20 Arizona State, 18-17, Saturday, in Mullett Arena.
Stanford (10-3, 3-1 Pac-12) had its five-dual win streak snapped, dropping its first Pac-12 contest. Arizona State improved to 6-5 overall and 4-1 in the conference.
Senior 197-pounder Nick Stemmet registered a 19-3 technical fall in 5:49 over Damion Schunke to give Stanford a 17-12 lead late in the dual. It was the 10th technical fall of the season for Stemmet, who improved to 27-6 on the season and 10-3 in duals.

Stanford jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the dual as No. 16 Nico Provo secured a 13-8 sudden victory decision over No. 18 Richard Figueroa at 125 pounds and graduate student Dom LaJoie came-from-behind to defeat Carter Dibert, 9-8, at 133 pounds. Provo is now 15-4 on the season with six wins over ranked opponents. LaJoie moves to 11-7 overall and 6-4 in duals.

The Sun Devils then reeled off three straight wins to go up 9-6 in the team score. Redshirt freshman Hunter Garvin tied it back up with a 4-1 sudden victory decision over Chance McLane at 165 pounds. Ranked No. 25, Garvin had what appeared to be a takedown as time expired in the third, but it was called off after an official review. The Iowa City native wasted no time picking up the three in overtime as he moved to 18-8 overall and 8-3 in duals.

True freshman Tye Monteiro added to the Cardinal lead with a 9-4 decision over Cael Valencia at 174 pounds. Monteiro gave up the first takedown, but outscored Valencia 9-1 down the stretch. It was the second dual win of the season for Monteiro, who is now 8-7 overall.

Arizona State heavyweight Cohlton Schultz, ranked No. 4 nationally, pinned Peter Ming in the second period to give the Sun Devils the dual win.
Stanford closes out the dual portion of its season, hosting No. 21 Oregon State on Sunday for Senior Day.
