ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Garrett Brown's first foray into the world of multi-events was a success. The Stanford All-American pole vaulter placed fifth in the heptathlon at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic on Saturday at Albuquerque Convention Center.
Brown was 10th after the four-event first day, but took advantage of this two best events on the second day to bolt ahead five spots in a three-event span. Brown's total of 5,370 points was good for No. 3 in Stanford indoor history.
The competition resumed with the 60-meter hurdles, which Brown won at 8.20 seconds, just ahead of reigning NCAA outdoor decathlon champion Leo Neugebauer, who would win the overall competition.
The next event was Brown's specialty, and he won easily at 17-0 ¾ (5.20 meters) and temporarily moved into fourth of 14 competitors. He finished by running 2:53.66 for 1,000 – Brown's fourth personal best of the seven-event competition.
Alaysia Oakes finished a strong two days by running a personal best 7.56 to finish second in the unseeded section of the 60. On Friday, she long-jumped a personal best 20-4 ½ (6.21m) to move up a spot to No. 9 on Stanford's all-time indoor list.
