STANFORD, Calif. – Returning home for the first time since Jan. 20, Stanford men's basketball dropped a battle with UCLA, 82-74, at Maples Pavilion.
Maxime Raynaud led the offense with 20 points to go with 10 rebounds, marking his ninth double-double of the season and the sixth over his last eight games. Spencer Jones added 15 points with three steals while Brandon Angel scored 12 points. Jones became the 14th player in program history to cross the 1,500-point threshold in a Stanford uniform.
The Cardinal shot 52.8 percent from the floor for the game but hit just four of 17 3-pointers despite entering the night as the league leaders from beyond the arc.
Neither team led by more than five points in the first half, which saw eight lead changes and three ties. Back-to-back 3-pointers from Michael Jones, who had six points and a season-high six assists, and Raynaud gave the Cardinal an early 11-6 advantage, and Stanford held the advantage until consecutive 3-pointers from UCLA swung the lead with 5:28 to go in the half. Angel scored Stanford's final eight points of the period, but Stanford trailed at the intermission, 35-33.
Stanford used a 10-1 run in the middle of the second half to take a 50-49 lead with 11:44 to play, but UCLA responded with a 12-5 run of its own to regain control with 7:07 to go, 63-57. A layup from Raynaud kept the Cardinal within a possession with 3:24 to play, but UCLA made its final 17 free throws to cement the result.
Stanford returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 10 at 7 p.m. against USC. The game will be broadcast on ESPNU.
