Road Trip Opens With Defeat at Utah

SALT LAKE CITY – Opening its final Pac-12 road trip of the regular season, Stanford men's basketball could not overcome a slow start at Utah, falling 90-68.

Michael Jones paced the Cardinal with 20 points, making eight field goals with a trio of 3-pointers. Andrej Stojakovic pitched in 13 points and six rebounds, while Kanaan Carlyle and Maxime Raynaud scored 10 points apiece.

The Cardinal shot 49.1 percent from the floor but made just four of 15 3-pointers, despite entering the game as the most potent 3-point shooting team in the Pac-12.

The Utes started the game on a 15-4 run, but Stanford responded with a 12-7 push to pull within six, 22-16. Raynaud tallied two baskets during the run, while Max Murrell scored his first basket after missing the previous nine games due to injury. Utah added a late run in the period and held the lead at the half, 46-27.

Stanford made 17 of 29 field goal attempts (58.6%) in the second half, but could not cut the lead beyond 14 points on two occasions. Michael Jones scored 15 of his 20 points in the second frame, while the team scored 28 of its 41 in the half from the paint. Josue Gil-Silva scored his first-career points in the closing seconds.

Tipping off for the final time on the road this season, Stanford will face Colorado on Sunday, March 3 at 6 p.m. The action will air on FS1.
