FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Stanford junior Jack Ryan made it two-for-two at the Zone E Diving Championships, completing a sweep of the men's springboard events in a competition that acts as a qualifier for the NCAA Championships.
Ryan won the 1-meter event on Wednesday to add to his 3-meter victory on Monday. Ryan scored 765.50 while teammate Hunter Hollenbeck placed 18th with 521.20, at the Northern Arizona University Aquatic and Tennis Complex. The top six advanced the NCAA Championships in Indianapolis. Ryan will dive in the 1-meter on March 28 and both Ryan and Hollenbeck compete in the 3-meter on March 29.
This was the second consecutive Zone title at 1-meter for Ryan and his fifth overall. Ryan also swept the springboard events at the Pac-12 Championships.
Ryan took the lead for good in the first round of the prelims, scoring 67.20 with a Forward 2 1/2 Somersault 1 Twist Pike with a 3.2 degree of difficulty. The dive was similar to the Forward 2 ½ Somersault 2 Twist Pike that he landed on Monday for his highest score in the 3-meter final.
In Wednesday's final, Ryan opened with the same dive, scoring 68.80 to extend his lead over USC's Shangfei Wang, who was second through the prelims and would maintain that position.
Ryan's best dive of the day was his Reverse 2 1/2 Somersault Tuck with a 3.0 degree of difficulty in the fifth round of the final, scoring 69.00. Ryan received scores of 8.00 from three of the seven judges.
