BERKELEY, Calif. - The No. 9 Cardinal picked up win number 20 on the season, and the first in Pac-12 play, with a 7-0 road shutout of No. 17 California. Sophomore NiJaree Canady was electric in the circle, and the Stanford bats saw four different hitters drive in runs.
The Card scored early, with junior Johnna Schroeder doubling to score two in the second inning.
Stanford held the lead at two runs until the sixth, when the Cardinal exploded for five runs on four hits to take a 7-0 lead. Freshman Jade Berry and sophomore River Mahler each had RBI doubles in the onslaught, with Berry's plating three and moving her into the team RBI lead with 18.
Canady finished with just two hits allowed in seven innings, striking out 11 and issuing no walks. The strong outing extended her streak of consecutive scoreless innings to 20.1, and the punchout total makes six-straight starts with 10 or more strikeouts. The sophomore's last run allowed was a solo homer in the win over No. 5 Georgia on March 3.
Stanford and the Golden Bears are back tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. PT for game two of the series.
