STANFORD, Calif. - The Cardinal rallied from an early deficit to beat Utah 5-3 at Smith Family stadium, moving to 23-5 on the season and a perfect 4-0 in Pac-12 play. Sophomore River Mahler led the way with two runs batted in, including the go-ahead score.
The Utes jumped out early, scoring two in the first and ending sophomore NiJaree Canady's scoreless inning streak at 24.1. The Card was able to answer with a run in the bottom of the first, when sophomore Emily Jones walked with the bases loaded to score a run.
In the third, Jones came around to score on an RBI single by Jade Berry and tie it at 2-2. Berry was able to score just a few pitches later, when Mahler drove her in with a single.
Utah was able to tie it in the top of the fourth, but Stanford again was able to answer. Senior Caelan Koch drove in the go-ahead run, and the Card would keep the lead the rest of the way.
Mahler added another RBI in the bottom of the fifth, singling to score Berry again.
Canady earned the win to move to 10-2 on the season, allowing just three runs in seven innings.
Stanford is back against the Utes tomorrow, with first pitch scheduled for 2:00 p.m. PT.
