Stanford Sits Third

STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford men's golf sits third after Monday's opening round of the NCAA Stanford Regional, with three golfers sitting in the top ten of the individual standings after 18 holes of play. The Cardinal scored an 11-under 269 in it's first trip around Stanford golf course, finishing play behind leader Illinois and Florida State.

Senior Michael Thorbjornsen carded a team-best 65 on Monday to sit two strokes behind the leader after one round. The Wellesley, Mass., native knocked down an eagle and six birdies opposite two birdies on his scorecard to head to the clubhouse with a share of second place in the individual standings.

Barclay Brown and Jake Beber-Frankel both finished with top ten days at 3-under, each proving to be the class of the field on par 4's with a field-best 3.70 scoring average. Brown led the Cardinal with seven birdies on his scorecard, while Beber-Frankel finished just behind with six.

It was a tale of two nines for Karl Vilips, scorching through the first half of his round with a bogey-free 30 front nine and leading the senior to a share of the lead at 6-under through 10. However, six bogeys in the final eight holes dropped the Aussie down to even-par for the round, finishing the day tied for 30th. Freshman Ethan Gao was the non-scoring round on the day for Stanford, registering a 5-over 75.

Action resumes tomorrow morning at 8:30 a.m. PT, as Stanford with start its second round on the first tee alongside Illinois and Florida State.
