TORONTO – Canada basketball unveiled its Olympic roster for the 2024 games in Paris, and former Stanford forward Dwight Powell was among the 12 players chosen to compete.
With the selection, Powell becomes the sixth Olympian in program history, joining Ron Tomsic (USA, 1956), Jim Walsh (USA, 1956), Andrew Vlahov (Australia, 1988, 1992, 1996, 2000), Johnny Rogers (Spain, 2000) and KZ Okpala (Nigeria, 2020). Tomsic and Walsh are the only medalists, having captured gold in Melbourne with the United States in 1956.
Powell is one of the top forwards in program history, with the Toronto native ranking 15th in scoring with 1,465 career points, seventh with 853 career rebounds and ninth with 118 career blocks. Powell was a two-time All-Pac-12 first team honoree while also earning all-freshman honors in 2011 and Most Improved Player accolades in 2013. He was the Pac-12’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year as a senior in 2014, and he helped the Cardinal win the NIT in 2012.
A second round pick in the 2014 NBA Draft, Powell completed his 10th NBA season in 2023-24 with the Dallas Mavericks, where he helped the franchise to its first NBA Finals since 2011. For his career, Powell holds averages of 7.1 points and 4.4 rebounds per game while shooting 60.2 percent from the floor.
Powell is one of Canada’s most experienced FIBA players, as he helped the team to bronze medals at the 2015 FIBA AmeriCup in Mexico and the 2023 FIBA World Cup in the Philippines, Japan and Indonesia.
The Olympics basketball tournament in Paris begin July 27 and run through August 10, with Canada opening against Greece on the 27th. Canada finishes group A action against Australia on July 30 and vs. Spain on August 2.
