STANFORD, Calif. – For the third-straight season, the Stanford Cardinal proved to be the best in the MPSF. Card fencers accounted for two MPSF individual champs, two NCAA West Regional champs, seven competitors at NCAAs and a pair of All-Americans.
The Card’s two All-American selections were repeat selections – Irene Yeu earned the honor for the third time in her career, and Crystal Qian picked it up for the second time in her career.
Qian was also named the women’s fencing Elite 90 recipient, which is given to the national championships competitor with the highest cumulative GPA.
Five others joined the Cardinal at nationals, including USFCA and MPSF First Team honorees Joy Yun, Casey Chan, Arianna Cao, Sanjay Kasi and Jared Hammerstrom.
After the season, longtime co-head coaches Lisa Posthumus and George Pogosov announced their retirement. The duo combined for over 45 years combined at the helm of the men’s and women’s fencing teams.
In Posthumus’ 25 seasons, the final 21 of which were alongside Pogosov, the Cardinal posted three Final Four finishes and 16 top-10 NCAA finishes. The programs boasts five Olympians and a 100 percent graduation rate.
