STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford battled to a 0-0 draw against San Francisco on Friday afternoon in the first action of the 2024 preseason. The game marks the first action of any Stanford team for the 2024-25 school year.
“It’s awesome for the team to put the jersey on and get out there to compete,” said the Knowles Family Director of Men’s Soccer Jeremy Gunn. “Obviously it’s extremely early - we’ve only been going for a couple of days and we train through the game. It’s certainly nowhere near the final product, but lots of good positives from the game.”
Stanford featured nearly every player on the roster in the exhibition against the Dons, providing the whole team with valuable game minutes ahead of the Cardinal’s first season in the ACC.
“Lot’s of fresh faces getting their first minutes and getting a good run out,” added Gunn. “It was fantastic for us to see all the players play.”
Stanford and San Francisco were well-matched in the game, each having spells of offensive pressure and strong defensive stands.
“As far as the soccer went, it was two very good teams and a bit of a stalemate,” said Gunn. “Neither team really got flowing and those are things that both teams will continue to grow as they play more and go through the season.
Among the players today were eight new faces who joined the team this offseason. Graduate transfers Louis Sterobo and Nik White each featured in the game alongside new signings Trevor Islam and Laszlo Bollyky.
Four freshmen featured for Stanford as well. Alex Chow, Joe Moyer, Eric Frintu, and Jordan Victor each stepped onto Cagan for the first time against San Francisco.
Stanford continues its preseason action on Sunday against Sacramento State. The Cardinal will play a third and final preseason match next weekend, hosting Cal Poly.
