Another Shutout Victory

Two second-half scores wrap Stanford’s exhibition slate with win over Cal Poly

STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford finished off the 2024 preseason with a 2-0 win over Cal Poly tonight. The Cardinal finishes the preseason with two wins and a draw, allowing no goals in the three games.

“I thought it was a really excellent game for us tonight,” said the Knowles Family Director of Men’s Soccer Jeremy Gunn. “It’s a night game, both teams … a couple weeks in now. And so it was just feeling more and more like season times. Which is exactly what we wanted out of this game.”

The sides went into the break scoreless, with both defenses limiting any major scoring opportunities.

“I thought it was a really competitive game throughout, where it was difficult to play because both teams were defending very very well,” said Gunn. “And I just felt that in the first half, we just had the slightly better chances in a really tough-fought half.”

The stalemate didn’t last long into the second half, with Zach Bohane finding the back of the net in the 47th minute to give the Cardinal the 1-0 lead. Fletcher Bank picked up the assist, collecting the ball of a save to find Bohane.

“It was tight, it was difficult,” added Gunn. “As the game wore on we started to compose ourselves and play better and better and better, and got stronger and stronger as it went along.”

Stanford was able to double the lead in the 64th minute, with the second goal coming from Nik White. Stanford remained in control for the final 30 minutes, closing out the win.

The Cardinal defense has been sharp through three showings, with tonight’s win making three-straight clean sheets.

The Cardinal opens regular season play on Thursday, hosting San Jos State at 7:00 p.m. PT from Cagan.
