Merrill Joins Stanford Staff

Sports performance specialist Alex Merrill joins the Cardinal men's golf program after previous stints at Purdue and Duke.

Stanford head coach Conrad Ray has completed his staff ahead of the 2024-25 season, announcing the addition of Hong Seh Lim Assistant Men’s Golf Coach Alex Merrill on Monday afternoon.

“We are excited to add Alex Merrill to the Stanford Men’s Golf coaching staff,” said Ray, the Knowles Family Director for Men’s Golf. “Alex brings a wealth of knowledge in golf-specific sports performance as well as holistic athlete development.  Our goal is to give our athletes a world-class platform for development and the physicality of golf has never been more important in today’s collegiate game. Alex will be a big factor in achieving that goal.”

Merrill comes to The Farm after a two-year tenure at Purdue as the Director of Administration & Performance for Golf, where he managed the operations and strength & conditioning for both the men's and women's golf programs. Under his guidance, the Boilermaker golf programs combined for six tournament wins and a pair of NCAA Championship appearances.

Prior to his role at Purdue, Merrill spent 12 years at Duke working as a sports performance coach with men's and women's golf, wrestling and women's tennis. During his there, Duke women’s golf won a pair of NCAA championships in 2014 and 2019, while the men’s golf program made five NCAA tournament appearances.

Additionally, Merrill spent time as head Strength and Conditioning Coach at Attain Sports Performance, a private training facility in Western Massachusetts where he worked with athletes ranging from the elementary to professional level. He is also a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength & Conditioning Association (NSCA), NG360 (Nike Golf) Performance Specialist, Certified FRC Mobility Specialist (FRCms) as well as Functional Movement Systems Certified (FMSC).

Merrill earned his bachelor’s degree in Physical Education from Keene State College and completed his graduate studies in Applied Exercise Science at Springfield College from 2008 to 2010.
