Cardinal Splits Day Two at MPSF Invite

Stanford suffers first loss of the season in double overtime to No. 3 USC

BERKELEY, Calif. – The No. 2 Cardinal went 1-1 on day two of the MPSF Invitational, topping No. 12 UC Davis before dropping a double-overtime decision to No. 3 USC.

Stanford opened the day with a matinee win over the 12th-ranked Aggies, 19-12. Dash McFarland and Ryan Ohl led the way with hat tricks, as Botond Balogh, Christopher Arakelian and Ben Forer each added in a pair of goals. Goalkeeper West Temkin stopped 10 shots in the win.

In the afternoon game, the Card met No. 3 USC. Stanford trailed 4-3 at half time, but jumped ahead after the break thanks to three-straight scores to open the third quarter. USC rallied to even it at 7-7.

The fourth quarter failed to see either side pull away, and the game went into overtime. In the extra period, Jackson Painter scored with 24 seconds left to take a 10-9 lead, but USC again answered with seven seconds left to tie it at 10-10 and force a second overtime.

The Trojans went on to take the game 12-11 in double overtime. Jackson Painter, Soren Jensen and Chase McFarland led the way with a pair of goals each, and Temkin made nine saves in the effort.

The Cardinal finishes second in the B bracket of the MPSF Invitational, and will take on host No. 6 California tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. PT.
