STANFORD, Calif. – The Stanford men’s swimming team opens its season Friday with the non-scoring Triple Distance Meet against Cal at Avery Aquatic Center.
The men’s meet will be held in conjunction with the women’s meet, with action beginning at 1 p.m.
The format calls for three races in each of six disciplines: sprint freestyle, distance freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, and individual medley. In addition, there will be a 200-yard freestyle relay and 200 medley relay.
The competitors will be the same in each of the disciplines. For example, last year Hayden Kwan, Aaron Sequeira, and Josh Zuchowski swam in races of three backstroke distances – at 50, 100, and 200 yards. Other competitors will race over three distances within their disciplines.
Individuals who have the fastest combined time for their three events are the unofficial winners.
There are no diving competitions.
Last year, Stanford won 11 of the 20 men’s races. The Cardinal won the best-of-three in four of them. Sequeira, now a senior, won all three backstroke races.
The Triple Distance Meet has been held annually (except the COVID year of 2020) in early November since 2001. It began as the Double Distance Meet and has been the Triple Distance Meet since 2002. This is the 14th time the meet has been held at Avery.
Stanford is ranked No. 7 and Cal is the preseason No. 1 by the CSCAA.
