Stanford Stumbles at No. 12 Notre Dame

The Cardinal suffered a 3-0 setback at No. 12 Notre Dame

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Finishing up the regular-season road slate on Sunday, No. 6 Stanford (13-3-1, 5-2-1) suffered a 3-0 loss at No. 12 Notre Dame (10-1-3, 4-0-3 ).

The Cardinal, which found itself in a scoreless match at halftime, allowed three goals in the second half.

Stanford played the bulk of the match without the aid of Jasmine Aikey after she was taken down from behind by Izzy Engle and injured in the 24th minute.

Engle was responsible for the first two goals for Notre Dame after being tripped up in the box in the 49th minute following a challenge from Nya Harrison. The referee originally ordered the teams to play on, but eventually went to the monitor and awarded a penalty kick following VAR. Leah Klenke buried the penalty that proved to be the game-winner.

Engle made it 2-0 in the 66th minute with her 11th goal of the season before Stanford defender Sophie Murdock, who replaced Aikey, was shown a red card in the 67th minute for a challenge just outside the Cardinal defensive box. That call, too, came following VAR as it was deemed Murdock denied a goal scoring chance as the last defender en route to goal.

Playing down a player, the Cardinal conceded a third goal in the 68th minute – this one from Ellie Hodsden.

Stanford goalkeeper Haley Craig was credited with six saves – including two spectacular stops in the first half to keep the Cardinal level to that point.

Stanford will have the week off from competition next week before returning to action on October 31 at home against rival California. Kickoff time for that match is set for 7 p.m.
