STANFORD, Calif. — The final round of the Stanford Intercollegiate, hosted by Dr. Condoleezza Rice, was full of drama. Third-ranked Stanford women’s golf entered the day with a four-stroke lead over USC but eventually trailed by four strokes on the back nine. The Cardinal overcame that deficit, pulled ahead with one hole to go, and then settled for a tie with the Trojans atop the leaderboard. Due to the tiebreaker of the combined overall drop scores, Stanford emerged with the trophy and the tournament win.
The stakes were high entering the final hole. Stanford led USC by one stroke, but the Cardinal were gaining an advantage. On 18, Megha Ganne knocked down a clutch birdie shot to push the Stanford lead to two. Meanwhile on the first green, Catherine Park knocked down a birdie putt to bring it back to a one-stroke Stanford lead, and then a Kelly Xu bogey on two brought it tied again. It came down to Andrea Revuelta on the third hole, and the freshman out of Spain was able to make par to secure a tie.
Based on the combined drop scores from all three rounds, Stanford was named the champion of the Stanford Intercollegiate, its first win in the home tournament since 2022.
The Cardinal comeback was on thanks in large part to the efforts of Revuelta down the stretch. After struggling at times through the first two rounds, she saved her best for last, picking up four-straight birdies late in the round to get her score well under par for the round. She shot a 3-under 68 in the final round, climbing 18 spots on the leaderboard to finish in a tie for 31st overall.
Stanford was led all weekend by Megha Ganne, who was stellar once again in the final round. She finished tied for third overall thanks to a 4-under 67 on Sunday, one stroke shy of tying a career-low. At 8-under for the weekend with a 205, it is the second-best tournament score of her career, behind only her Carmel Cup win from 2023. No player had more birdies than her 16 over the weekend.
On the individual side, Leigh Chien got as high as second overall and one stroke back of the lead early on in the third round. She was 3-under through the first nine holes, but then added a pair of bogeys shortly after on six and seven to eventually settle for a 1-under 70. It gave Chien a tie for fifth overall, the best finish of her young career. Meja Ortengren joined Chien in a tie for fifth overall after Ortengren posted a 2-under 69 on Sunday, adding five more birdies to her weekend count.
Elsewhere for the Cardinal, Nora Sundberg finished 12th outright (69-71-70-210), Paula Martin Sampedro was tied for 14th (68-72-72-212), Xu settled for a share of 21st (69-74-71-214) and Caroline Sturdza posted her sixth-career round in the 60s with a 69 on Sunday (73-80-69-222).
Jasmine Koo was able to sneak past her USC teammate Catherine Park to win the individual championship with an 11-under 202 for the weekend. Park shot an 8-under 63 and seemed to have the title until she bogeyed on 18 and Koo was able to gain a stroke for the win.
Stanford has one more tournament in the fall. The Cardinal head to Hawaii for the Nanea Invitational on Oct. 28-30, closing out the 2024 portion of their schedule.
